Senior Homeowner Stabilization Program

Many senior citizens in the District delay investing in home repairs that will save them money in the long run. Eventually, ignored repairs reduce the value of the home and end up costing a small fortune to address. Despite the long-term savings of investments such as weather stripping, dual pane windows, and insulation, which all reduce energy consumption and cost, senior homeowners often do not have the flexible income to support these repairs, and the fixes are postponed. The accumulation of these home maintenance costs overwhelms owners with fixed incomes, often forcing them to sell or transfer ownership.

Our Solution? Provide grants to District seniors for financially out-of-reach repairs, preventing displacement and enabling seniors to age in place.

How it Works

Step 1: Submit Application

A partner Community Based Organization (CBO) will assist the senior homeowner in completing the online application.

Step 2: Application Approval

The application will be reviewed and processed in 30 days or less. Once conditionally accepted, the CBO will be notified.

Step 3: Schedule Inspection

CBO will assist the homeowner in scheduling an inspection for the accepted home.

Step 4: Logistics Planning

CBO will then discuss temporary living arrangements and diversion options that are best suited for the homeowner.

Step 5: Project Approval

If home repair is viable, the Project Manager will schedule a virtual meeting with all stakeholders to inform the senior homeowner of approval and secure a convenient start date.

Step 6: Repairs & Feedback

Once work is completed, CBO will assist the senior in completing a feedback survey within 30 days. This is an opportunity for the homeowner to share their thoughts on the repair services and other related feedback.

If the home repair project is impossible or unreasonable, the senior homeowner will receive a detailed notice of application non-selection.
